Delhi Police personnel deployed during protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar were reportedly seen without name tags, a move officials described as a deliberate measure to prevent officers from being identified and targeted on social media.

According to police officials, the decision followed the July 20 Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) march, when some personnel involved in crowd control were allegedly identified and targeted online, with claims that their families were also subjected to online harassment.

During Friday’s protests, several demonstrators filmed and questioned police personnel about the missing name tags. Some officers said their tags had fallen off during the commotion, while others said they had forgotten to attach them or had deliberately removed them.

The Delhi Police has faced scrutiny over crowd-control measures during previous protests, while officials maintain that force was used when demonstrators turned violent.

The issue has now raised questions over police identification during public demonstrations — and the growing impact of social media on crowd-control operations.
