The United Nations is speaking out after tennis star Coco Gauff revealed she was subjected to a wave of r@cist messages following a controversial moment during the China Open.

On Saturday (Oct. 10), the UN Human Rights Office condemned the online attacks against the 22-year-old, calling the messages “appalling” and highlighting how Black female athletes are disproportionately targeted with r@cial abuse.

The organization stated:

“R@cist messages such as those targeting tennis player Coco Gauff online are appalling and illustrate that Black female athletes are specifically targeted for vitriol and r@cial abuse.”

The controversy began after Gauff stopped play during her match against China’s Sun Xinran, citing a distracting electronic advertisement. Following a video review, the umpire ordered the point to be replayed. Although Gauff ultimately won the match, she faced intense criticism and r@cist messages online.

Addressing the backlash, Gauff wrote:

“You can dislike me or disagree about what happened without being r@cist.”

She also revealed that the volume of r@cist comments and direct messages she received was “insane,” adding:

“Lastly, I’m not a cheater or a thief.”

The UN Human Rights Office urged athletes, coaches, sports organizations and fans to stand together against r@cism and s3xism, emphasizing that discriminatory abuse has no place in sports.

Gauff later admitted the controversy had been emotionally draining. She was eliminated from the China Open on Wednesday (Oct. 7) after losing to Elise Mertens.

What are your thoughts on the UN speaking out in support of Coco Gauff?
