To God who has kept me through it all… thank you Lord, there is truly none like you and there will never be🙏🏾 To my support system… there are no words to describe how thankful I am for all of you. Through my lowest moments you all supported me and helped me through this thing called college. On Indigenous Peoples Day, the Tohono O’odham Nation is fighting to protect thousands of sacred saguaros from removal for Trump’s expanding border wall. The Nation says federal contractors were scheduled to begin removing the cactuses October 12th without communicating with the tribe, says Chairman Jose. For the Tohono O’odham, saguaros are considered people. They also provide food and shelter for desert wildlife. “Trespassing on our land to remove the sacred saguaros is like having masked men break into your house and take away your children,” said Tohono O’odham Nation Chairman Verlon Jose. “The ha:ṣañ are our family, as much a part of us as any blood relative. To destroy them by the thousands carves a wound in our hearts that will not heal. We call on all people for solidarity as we work to protect our culture and our land from this useless, destructive wall.” The Nation has asked the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals for an emergency injunction to stop the removal. Meanwhile, a federal judge has blocked border wall construction in Texas’s Big Bend region following a challenge to DHS’s authority to waive environmental and other laws...a strategy that could offer another legal path for the Nation. From the 200 year-old cottonwoods destroyed in Lochiel to sacred saguaros now threatened, construction is changing the landscape and turning open wildlife corridors into divided ecosystems. The Center for Biological Diversity warns that habitat fragmentation is one of the leading causes of the extinction crisis, and describes the border wall as among its most severe examples. For communities whose ancestral lands span the border, the wall also cuts through a living homeland, cutting off 3,000 tribal members from life saving services. UPDATE: By Monday evening, the Tohono O’odham Nation said federal border wall contractors had failed to show up to begin removing thousands of sacred saguaros, despite earlier indications that work would begin on Indigenous Peoples Day. The Nation said a large crowd of tribal members and supporters gathered near the border in a show of solidarity for tribal sovereignty. Full report at kpfa.org/news
