Introducing, Montana Kaoud… 😘

We’re all made up of the artists that came before us.

Consciously or unconsciously, we take elements from the work we love, mix them with everything else we’ve seen and experienced, and hopefully make something that feels like us.

I remember so clearly being a kid and obsessed with Modigliani’s almond eyes, and the tiny round cheeks of @janerayillustration . @quentinblakehq showed me how to create character and story with just a few lines, Edward Gorey that you don’t need colour, and Picasso that simplicity can be the most powerful thing of all.

As a teenager I pored over @mirocomachiko ‘s compositions, filling every inch of space with her animal forms, while Bill Traylor’s silhouettes drew me to them like nothing else. My friend Steve Camps taught me personally about using wax, and about painting to fit the frame rather than the other way around. My love for @sophiewake_artist work inspired me to turn my illustrations into paintings, and it was because of the fantastic @nikoenikoeniko that I first tried digital drawing.

A little bit of this, a little bit of that, mixed with all the bits that are uniquely mine, and somewhere along the way my own work as I know it was born.

Next week’s Back to Blank continues with personal style, looking at how the artists you love can help you find your own. So this week I’m doing a deep dive into the ten artists that made me, and the specific thing each one brought to the work I make today.

caravaggio @robertobolle una finale ❤️

january 10, 2023. i receive a short message:

“good morning maria. roberto bolle has advised us he is inviting you to dance with him three performances of «caravaggio» by mauro bigonzetti”

shock and awe. roberto! unattainable, hugely popular, distant, and a stranger to me. in may, i travel to argentina. a 16-hour flight from istanbul, i arrive exhausted, with a rehearsal the next day. roberto arrives from milan the following day; he, too, has spent 15 hours in the air. straight from the plane, he heads to the studio for rehearsal. and for 3 hours straight, he teaches me, a 22yo inexperienced girl, a ballet so new to me. not a single rehearsal at half strength. never.

3 years (an eternity!) and 36 performances (unbelievable!) later, one fact remains unchanged: roberto bolle is the hardest-working artist and the most devoted to his art. but now he is no longer just a symbol and a star that inspires me. still as unfathomable as ever, yet now close and dear to my heart, through our partnership and the example of his dancing, he has taught me all these years not only the art of performance, but also the magic of bringing a role to life, the depth of a character, and simply the greatness of a person. after our final performance, i told him through tears: “you have influenced my life so much you cannot even imagine”. i want the seeds of beauty and sincerity that roberto has planted to keep growing within me, always.

this chapter has come to an end. it was the final run of our “caravaggio” performances. my gratitude to roberto is beyond question. but i am grateful to the ballet itself, too! the life of a genius, an artist. returning to this story again and again over the years, i discovered new layers of meaning in the words “creativity”, “inspiration”, “light”, “darkness”, “death”, and “eternal life”. where would i be if this ballet had never crossed my path?

Zooming out from my smallest Ultramarines ever painted!

I guess it will be almost impossible to see all the details through the display windows from Friday, so I wanted to give you a little preview here, while also teasing just how tiny it actually is!
