When all of Hollywood shows up for the Academy Museum Gala, you know it's going to be one serve after another.

Social media made contemporary art irrelevant by offering immediacy, influence, and spectacle at a scale no gallery can match. Art’s one saving grace is its depth of history, centuries of artists in conversation, audible only to someone willing to stand still and listen. The contract of contemplation between creator and audience is still what separates art, books, and film from algorithmic doomscrolling. By giving up the power to choose what comes next, we’re forced to confront what we’d otherwise swipe past.

The slowest, most antiquated forms of art, like painting and sculpture, now seem novel by comparison, having so obviously forfeited the race for quick attention that they can ask for the slow kind instead. The simplicity of a single painting or sculpture forces a question: why this one thing, in a world of infinite, immediate images? Answering it is a herculean task few painters and sculptors even attempt, most preferring to retreat into mesearch about their own identities. The field is wide open for anyone ambitious enough to look away from the mirror.

The art that loses fastest tries to compete on social media’s own terms through loudness, lewdness, and provocation. Performance art like this has existed since Gutai, the Happenings, and the Viennese Actionists, the lineage the Randomsauce Performers in this carousel safely reference from their academic perch. But once a video of them screaming half-naked in viscous fluid hits social media, the art history drains out of it, and it’s left competing with OnlyFans ads, mukbangs, and street pranks.

The comparison exposes how much this kind of art has always traded on gimmickry. The Actionists could at least claim their work was legally dangerous in 1960s Vienna, a bravery no insulated MFA student can claim. The museum audience is bored rather than shocked as the performances drone on, and online the commenters fixate on the crowd instead: how could anyone sit through something so insufferable? The digital viewer pities the people stuck in the room, then does the one thing they can’t and swipes away. There was no conversation to listen to, just one more person screaming for attention.
