KEN FRIAR OBE 1934-2026⁣ ⁣ Ken Friar’s Arsenal life spanned an incredible nine decades. In 1945, 11-year-old Ken was playing football with friends outside Highbury when their ball rolled under a car: ‘Boy what are you doing?’, shouted Arsenal manager George Allison, who summoned Ken over and told him to return the following day. He did just that and was offered a job running messages from the front door to the box office. ⁣ ⁣ Five years later, Arsenal offered him a full-time position as a junior in the box office. He became assistant secretary in 1965 and, after playing a key role in Highbury hosting the world-title fight between Muhammad Ali and Henry Cooper in 1966, Ken became club secretary in 1973 and then managing director in 1983. ⁣ ⁣ Now effectively running the club, Ken presided over the successful George Graham era. Leaving our Highbury home had long been under discussion, with Ken involved in talks that could have led the club to play further afield but in 2000, his vision saw him move into a new role as director responsible for the club’s relocation from Highbury to a new stadium, just a stone’s throw away in Ashburton Grove.⁣ ⁣ His dedication led to the stadium being opened by the Duke of Edinburgh and in 2006 and he was later invited with the squad to visit the Queen at Buckingham Palace to further honour the accomplishment. He was made an OBE for his Services to Football in 2000 and given the Freedom of the Borough of Islington. In 2014 the South Stand Bridge was renamed The Ken Friar Bridge, complete with a statue depicting young Ken outside Highbury. ⁣ ⁣ Stepping down as an executive director in 2020 and appointed life president, Ken will never be forgotten. In 1945, he would sneak down the tunnel to catch a glimpse of his heroes playing on the hallowed Highbury turf, featuring the stars of Herbert Chapman’s great Arsenal sides. Over 90 years later and with the 11th league title of his lifetime secured, he still relished every second of seeing Arsenal players conquer all, putting our name in lights across the world – and we couldn’t have done it without him. ⁣ ⁣ Our thoughts are with Ken Friar’s family and many friends at this difficult time.
