Simo Häyhä (1905–2002) was a Finnish soldier widely regarded as the deadliest sniper in history. During the Winter War between Finland and the Soviet Union (1939–1940), he was credited with more than 500 enemy kills, although the exact number remains disputed. Nicknamed the “White Death,” Häyhä operated in freezing temperatures while wearing white camouflage and using a Finnish M/28-30 rifle with iron sights rather than a telescopic scope. Before the war, he had worked as a farmer and developed his marksmanship through hunting and shooting competitions. In March 1940, Häyhä was severely wounded in the face by an explosive bullet, requiring extensive medical treatment and reconstructive surgery. He survived and eventually returned to civilian life, where he continued farming and hunting. He also enjoyed breeding dogs, particularly Finnish Spitz hunting dogs, and was photographed with his dog Kille after the war. Häyhä lived to the age of 96, passing away on April 1, 2002, in Hamina, Finland. #history #military #war #photography #finland
