"I’m enjoying this. It’s like confession!” Brian Cox's response to the interview not the photo shoot though that could have gone badly wrong. I started worrying when told that we would be let into Brians flat by his daughter and he would be coming straight from the airport. I imagined a trans Atlantic flight but things looked like improving when it turned out to be just Italy instead, so thats okay then? The temperature in London had soared to the mid 30’s and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. Arriving as planned we were greeted by Brians very friendly daughter who then informed us that this was a brand new flat as the lease had ran out on his old one. Whilst filming “Succession” his art, furniture, books and clothes had been moved and today would be the first time her dad had seen the place. So thats alright then. Then she left ! So Brian emerged from a taxi looking flustered and hot , with heavy suitcase and rung the doorbell as he doesn’t even have a key. I let him and welcomed him into his new home and prayed that they paintings on the wall were hung to his liking and he wouldn’t be upset with my photography bags all over the sofas. I felt like an estate agent explaining where the bathroom was. He was surprisingly okay about it all but I could see the heat and flight had taken their toll and took the decision to say I would wait outside so he could rest for half an hour..a good decision it turned out as the flat was so busy with art hanging on nearly every spare inch of wall I had decided to shoot with the intense sunlight on the balcony , armed with a cloth flag and a frame with diffusion.
The little rest had done it s work and Brian came out , enthused and fighting fit. What look like anger is in fact a jocular manner and an expressive manner. I was disappointed the mag wouldn’t consider my BW versions…so here they are .
