Neighbors, Drs. Travan and Travis Jasper grew up in one of Richmond, Virginia’s poorest neighborhoods and now serve as co-directors of the emergency department at Chippenham Hospital in their hometown.

Growing up, the twins said they didn’t have running water and sometimes went hungry: “We had no running water. We used to go and get water from like one of the parks. And we were hungry, hungry literally and hungry for success. Because for us, that was the only way we were going to get out.”

When the twins were 12, their uncle was hospitalized, and they said a doctor treated him dismissively. That experience inspired them to promise they could do better.

The brothers went on to graduate high school as co-valedictorians, attend Stanford for college and earn their medical degrees from the University of Chicago.

Now, more than 40 years later, they’ve returned to the community where they grew up to lead its emergency department. They both started as co-directors in April and even wear different-colored scrubs so patients and coworkers can tell them apart.
