A Ghost at our Cottage… 👻

Well, it is Halloween after all… so I thought it might be the perfect opportunity to share a few of our rather curious experiences with the unexplained.

We live in a farmhouse dating back to 1719 and I’ve always felt a presence here, nothing sinister, thankfully.

The old curator at the Castle confirmed that ours isn’t the only farm steading on the Raby estate where the television has been known to switch itself on at 3am, at full volume, for absolutely no apparent reason!

I’ve had two rather curious experiences while working as a room guide at the castle, both in my favourite room. On the first occasion, I felt a very firm tug on the back of my blazer. I actually gasped, thinking I’d caught it on an ornament or the door handle, but I was nowhere near either. It felt rather mischievous and playful and, strangely enough, I wasn’t frightened at all.

On another occasion, in that very same room, I caught sight of what looked like a ghostly reflection in a bookcase.

But perhaps my strangest experience happened many years ago, shortly after my mum passed away. While visiting a customer, I saw a gentleman standing beside her table, quite clearly, folding newspapers. I described exactly what I’d seen to the lady, who immediately recognised him as her late husband. She told me that he used to fold his newspapers in precisely that spot. I’d never met him.

Now, I don’t pretend to have all the answers, but I’ve certainly experienced a few things over the years that I simply can’t explain.

Our little ghostly visitor today was just for a bit of Halloween fun, but Daisy certainly took to her role beautifully, and I think you’ll agree she rather stole the show 👻

Are you a believer? Have you ever experienced something you simply couldn’t explain? Do share them in the comments, I’d be fascinated to read your stories too.

Happy Halloween from our little corner of the countryside 🎃👻🍂

Let them trick-or-treat. Then buy the candy back. 🎃

This is the Halloween tradition more parents are trying, and kids are surprisingly into it:

1) The costume, the vibe, the full neighborhood loop. The magic of Halloween stays entirely intact.

2) After the haul, back home, they pick a handful of favorites to keep.

3) The rest goes up for sale. You buy it back at a set rate, (be creative) 10¢ a piece, $1 a pound, or a flat buyout with a highly-desired reward prepared.

4)They spend it on something real: the toy they’ve been eyeing, sports equipment…. again.. up to you.. be creative!

Why Dr. Paul? Why?

→ It builds self-control. A study that followed 1,000 kids from birth to age 32 found that childhood self-control predicted adult health and finances, even after accounting for IQ and family background. A candy buyback is low-stakes practice.

→ It cuts down on artificial dyes, loads and loads of processed junk. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, artificial food colors plus a common preservative increased hyperactivity in 3-year-olds and 8–9-year-olds. These were ordinary kids, not just kids with ADHD.

→ It teaches that money has value and that every choice is a trade-off.

→ And nobody has to be the “no candy” house.

Two goals: protect your children and make great memories.

had to save my best costume for last DUHHH
