Ik had er nog twee… and I like it!

Alex and I thankfully got to have the most incredible honeymoon. It wasn’t until our last full day in Paris that I realized something was seriously wrong. I woke up thinking I had pink eye, so we went to a pharmacy to get eye drops. But within a few hours, the pain, redness, and vision in my left eye had gotten significantly worse.

Following my dad’s advice (he’s an MD), we went to an emergency eye hospital in Paris. The ophthalmologist didn’t hold back as he told me I had a very serious case of keratitis, and that permanently losing vision in my left eye was not out of the question. His demeanor was not reassuring, and panic set in.

He recommended that I be hospitalized, but after explaining we had a flight home to the U.S. the following day, he said he would be comfortable letting me leave as long as I used my antibiotic eye drops every single hour, including night, and saw an ophthalmologist immediately after landing in California.

Alex didn’t sleep a WINK for more than 30 hours. He set alarms on his phone throughout the night to make sure I got my eye drops every hour.

On our flight from Paris to Dallas, my vision got significantly worse and the pain became excruciating. We were advised to skip our connecting flight to California and go straight to an ER in Dallas. If time was of the essence when it came to saving my vision, we weren’t going to wait.

9 hours later, I was seen by an ophthalmologist. She was also unsure what a full recovery would look like for my particular case of keratitis. She took 5 swabs from my eye to send for lab cultures, but because I had already started antibiotics in Paris, there was a good chance we wouldn’t be able to determine what type of keratitis I had. It’s still unclear why cultures weren’t taken in Paris before starting antibiotics.

One of the biggest fears was Acanthamoeba Keratitis, a more rare but extremely serious case that can cause permanent vision loss and, in severe cases, removal of the eye. At this point, I couldn’t see anything out of my left eye. I could barely keep my eyes open because of the EXTREME sensitivity to light, and the pain was unbearable.
