For most of Donald Trump’s second term, pundits have assumed that Republicans’ seemingly impregnable Senate map had the edge over Democrats’ lead in national polls.

Now, with election day here, betting markets and other quantitative forecasts all make Democrats clear favourites to flip the upper chamber.

Our prediction model is a substantial outlier. We see the race for the Senate as almost a pure coin toss, giving Democrats a mere 52% chance of gaining control.

The Economist’s forecast does, however, give Democrats a 93% chance of flipping the House, with an average simulated majority of 234 seats to 201 for the Republicans.
