I’ve never heard grief explained in a way that felt this heartbreaking and comforting at the same time.

During a 2021 appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Andrew Garfield fought back tears while speaking about his mother, Lynn, who died in 2019.

Instead of describing grief as something he wanted to overcome, Garfield explained why he hoped it would stay with him.

To him, grief was the love that remained. The love he would have continued giving his mother if they had been given more time together.

That perspective changes everything.

The pain is still there, but suddenly grief is not just about losing someone. It is also evidence of how deeply they were loved.

Garfield was appearing while promoting Tick, Tick... Boom!, in which he played composer Jonathan Larson, and the conversation naturally became about art, loss, love, and using creativity to process something that never completely disappears.

There was no polished celebrity answer here. Just a son talking about how much he still loves his mother.

Sometimes grief is simply love with nowhere left to go.

Save this powerful Andrew Garfield interview moment or share it with someone who might need these words today.
