Have you ever noticed how everywhere you go now is full of noise and advertisements and distraction? If you go to almost any public space, you are assaulted by someone saying something at you. According to the philosopher Matthew Crawford, the world has stolen our peace and silence, and it’s trying to sell it back to us. Crawford calls this ‘attentional commons’ because, a long time ago, common land was once open to all: to keep animals on, to grow things on, and to enjoy. And then, over centuries, various people privatised this land and tried to sell it back to the people as property. Crawford argues that something similar is going on with our own peace and quiet. The example he gives is of an airport. There are screens at the gates. There are adverts on the bottom of security trays, there are adverts above urinals, and there is a television above the bar that you cannot switch off. And yet, upstairs, there is one place that silence still happens. It’s the business lounge. Silence has not disappeared. It has become a product, and you can buy it. You can buy peace. The problem is that this is hard to object to because each individual intrusion seems trivial. Nobody has ever been seriously harmed by adverts on the back of a receipt. And yet, we feel the loss in aggregate. So, if you feel unable to think in a public space, that is not your fault. And it’s not uncommon. The world has taken something from you, and it has turned it into a resource. Nobody asked you. Nobody even told you. They just stole your peace of mind, and they’re trying to sell it back to you.

An 8-foot-tall naked statue of President Trump holding a golf club and a globe-shaped ball in one hand and scales in the other titled "The Orange Plague" has been put up at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France. He’s sitting on the shoulders of another man, who looks frail, and the whole thing is covered in 23-karat gold leaf. Danish artist Jens Galschiøt says the work is inspired by "The Emperor’s New Clothes" and asks how long people will allow the powerful to be carried on their backs. He says Trump was chosen as the subject because of his efforts to roll back climate initiatives and pressure other countries to do the same. Find “NPR News Now” wherever you listen to podcasts. Host: Korva Coleman/NPR Reporter: Teri Schultz/NPR Producer: Michael Zamora/NPR
2 months of growth & proof that the little things add up 💪🙂‍↕️ Progressive overload, eating whole foods, fueling my body properly and showing up even when I didn’t feel like it. You can’t expect change if you’re not willing to change your habits. Eat to GROW, train with intention and trust the work you’re putting in. You’d be surprised what your body is capable of when you give it a chance. @dfyne.official code ‘SYDNEY10’ #bodybuilding #bulk #physique #motivation #posing
