🎨 Jeff Garrison and Chris Arnold met as freshman roommates at the Columbus College of Art & Design. After graduation, they both ended up in Dallas painting backdrops for operas and musicals. In 1992, they decided they were destined for even bigger things, so the pair founded Eyecon Studios. This mural is the result of a Downtown Improvement District competition that Eyecon Studios won.

In an interview, Arnold said, "The title of The Storm is a metaphor for the creative process, The storm gathers when you have an assignment or a piece you want to execute. You get into this tumultuous state of mind. Staring at that blank canvas, anxiety mounts up, and then it starts clicking, and that’s the center of the storm. That’s where we get this passion, this fire swirling."

The Conductor portrayed in this mural is Arnold's dad. In that interview Arnold said, "He was totally blown away by the idea. He fit the bill because all the people represented are local, and they’re people who were currently practicing their craft. Dad’s been a music teacher at Leslie A. Stemmons Elementary School his whole life and a conductor. He was really excited about all those aspects."

In the top middle part, making clever use of empty space, artists carved famous lines from Ralph Waldo Emerson, "The artists must be sacrificed to their art. Like the bees, they must put their lives into the sting they give."👏
