The 2026 FIFA World Cup is officially arriving this summer from June 11 to July 19, 2026, bringing the world’s biggest sporting spectacle back to North America. While the tournament is historically co-hosted alongside Mexico and Canada, the United States will host the vast majority of the tournament, with 78 of the record-breaking 104 matches taking place stateside across 11 major U.S. cities. This iteration marks a massive evolution for soccer, expanding for the first time to a massive 48-team field that will progress through a grueling 39-day schedule. Under the leadership of head coach Mauricio Pochettino, the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) features an exciting core including Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie, kicking off their highly anticipated Group D campaign on home turf against Paraguay, Australia, and Türkiye. Upwards of a million international fans are expected to flood iconic NFL and MLS venues—such as Dallas Stadium and Atlanta Stadium for the semi-finals—before the tournament reaches its epic crescendo at the New York New Jersey Stadium (MetLife Stadium) on July 19, featuring a historic, first-ever Super Bowl-style half-time show. While excitement for the tournament is at an all-time high, the United States is routinely mocked by the global soccer community for its notoriously lackluster and uninspiring crowd chants. Unlike the deeply poetic, witty, or cutting anthems heard throughout Europe and South America, American stadium chants often feel recycled from completely different sports, heavily relying on simplistic high-school cheerleading prompts like “Defense! [Clap-Clap] Defense!” or the agonizingly basic, repetitive chant of “U-S-A! U-S-A!” Even the official, mainstream rally cry of the USMNT fanbase—“I believe that we will win!”—is frequently criticized by purists as a cheesy, overly American college basketball cheer that lacks the raw, intimidating grit of traditional football culture.
