These are fenugreek seeds, normally something you’d find in a spice aisle, but in this video I show that you can use them to make a water cleaning flocculant! Soaking the seeds in water releases galactomannan, a giant sugar-based polymer, which forms long polymer chains that are good at grabbing onto tiny suspended particles and clumping together into flocs. The best part is that this kind of process can be used to remove microplastics from water, and research has shown that fenugreek derived polymers are remarkably effective at that. Plus, fenugreek seeds are biodegradable and this method is an excellent example of how we can look to nature for sustainable ways to tackle environmental problems. So where one person may see a spice, I see a microplastic-fighting slime! That’s green chemistry for the win! #chemteacherphil #acs #greenchemistry
President Trump joked at a rally in Georgia that saying “Mohammad” gives you a 65% chance of correctly guessing someone’s name in the Middle East. He made the remark while discussing Iran’s leadership as he campaigned for Republican candidates ahead of the November midterm elections.
