A new study led by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health has found that older adults who nap frequently may face a significantly higher risk of developing dementia. By tracking nearly 1,000 Medicare beneficiaries aged 65 and older over a 10-year period, the study revealed that individuals who napped on most days or every day had a 48% higher risk of a dementia diagnosis compared to those who rarely or never napped. This increased risk remained present even after accounting for factors like age, existing health conditions, and overall nighttime sleep duration. The researchers also noted that unintentional nappingโ€”such as nodding off unexpectedlyโ€”was tied to a 39% higher risk, while short naps lasting 30 minutes or less were associated with a 40% higher risk. Crucially, the authors emphasize that these findings do not prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship, meaning that taking a nap does not inherently cause brain damage or cognitive decline. Instead, frequent or worsening daytime sleepiness is considered an early warning sign or biomarker. The underlying neurodegenerative changes associated with early-stage dementia can damage the brain regions responsible for regulating wakefulness, leading to increased fatigue and daytime dozing long before memory loss or other clinical symptoms officially manifest. Stage shots are in ๐Ÿค“ Super happy with the physique @gingertraining and I brought last weekend! The four months leading up to show were the most exhausting of my life. Between low calories and high cardio I was dead. By the end I was running on absolute E mentally and physically, and there were many early mornings on the treadmill spent reminding myself that itโ€™s a blessing to move my body. Really thankful for this challenge, and the renewed motivation itโ€™s given me. I can do hard things, and Iโ€™m more motivated to train than ever. Ready to come back better next year! Special thanks to my posing coaches @_tink_81 @teamgrahams for talking me through my breakdowns lol Very thankful to be surrounded by friends and family for my first show, and second place was pretty dang cool too!! Overall I am just grateful for the opportunity god gave me this summer to better myself and challenge my discipline. It was a good 16 weeks ๐Ÿ˜ #ocbbikini #ocb #bikinibodybuilding #bodybuilding #gymgirl
