STRENGTH RESERVE: One of my favourite topics from my conversation with the JEDI GRANDMASTER OF NEUROSCIENCE @hubermanlab was the concept of STRENGTH RESERVE! 🎙️ Full discussion with Dr Andrew Huberman on Huberman Lab (link in story!) The principle is simple: the stronger you are, the smaller the percentage of your maximum strength required for each swimming stroke. So, theoretically, increasing your weighted pull-up strength could make thousands of repeated strokes relatively less demanding! 🔬 THE SCIENCE: 🇳🇴 Norwegian University of Science and Technology (Aspenes et al., 2009): Found that 11 weeks of combined strength and endurance training improved swimming pulling force and 400m performance. 🇳🇴 Nord University (Fone & van den Tillaar, 2022): A systematic review of 27 studies found that combining strength training with swimming generally improved performance, with gains of approximately 2–2.5% across training methods. Of course, strength must be combined with technique and endurance, but the research supports a simple principle: DON’T JUST TRAIN TO SWIM MORE. TRAIN TO GET STRONGER TOO! 💪
