The road trip was inspired by Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias. In 1487, Dias set sail to find a sea route to India, hoping to reach its lucrative spice markets. After sailing down Africa’s western coast, violent storms pushed his ships far out to sea. When he finally reached land in February 1488, he realized he had unknowingly sailed around Africa’s southern tip without ever seeing it. Dias wanted to continue toward India, but his exhausted crew, running low on supplies, insisted on turning back. On his return, he finally saw the cape, which he reportedly named the Cape of Storms. King John II later renamed it the Cape of Good Hope, recognizing its potential to open a sea route to Asia. Ten years later, Vasco da Gama reached India using the route Dias had pioneered. Ironically, in 1500, Dias perished when his ship sank during a storm near the very cape he had sailed around twelve years earlier.
