Lifting heavy weights will improve your bone density. A lot of the recommendations for “heavy weights” means above 80 percent of your max. To put it simply, that’s what you can lift for 6 reps or less. It places a high mechanical load on the bone and signals your body to build stronger, denser bones. This is especially important for menopausal women and anyone wanting to age with strength and independence. But, you can’t walk into the gym on day one and lift that heavy. Even if your goal was to become the strongest powerlifter on the planet, I would never start you at 80 percent. To lift heavy safely and effectively, you first need to: • Learn how to lift with proper technique • Build work capacity • Build muscle and prepare your joints and connective tissues for higher loads Lifting heavy is one of the best things you can do for bone health and longevity. But there is a process to earn the right to go heavy.

Working from home on a Friday sounded like a great idea. I opened my laptop at nine, made a very ambitious to-do list, and somehow spent the entire day finding reasons not to look at it. I’m choosing to believe I was just being very efficient at taking breaks. 🙃🤍 Happy Friday, you.
I recently underwent surgery to repair a wrist injury I sustained during my first tournament of the season. While I had hoped to avoid surgery, after talks with my family, coaches, and athletic training staff I know I made the best decision for my long-term health and my future in the game I love. It’s certainly not how I envisioned the next few months, but sometimes the journey takes an unexpected turn, and I’m choosing to embrace this one with patience, and a whole lot of determination. Recovery will take time, but I’m incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by amazing people who continue to lift me up, encourage me, and remind me that every challenge is an opportunity to grow. Having the right people by your side makes all the difference, and I couldn’t be more grateful. A special thank you to Dr. Carlson and the incredible team at HSS in New York for taking such great care of me, and to my teammates, coaches, family, and everyone who has supported me along the way. For now, it’s all about healing, and trusting the process. I can’t wait to be back with my team, doing what I love. I’ll be back before you know it, stronger and more grateful than ever! Go Canes!
