When Nella was born, I spent the first few years of her life actively advocating for Down syndrome causes and organizations. Down Syndrome Awareness Month was as new to me as it was to people hearing about it from me. I learned so much those first few years, and I wanted to blast it to the world. I still do, but the knowingness is less shock and newness and more deep wisdom in my bones. I hardly ever look back at things I wrote that first year—not even Bloom—because I can barely relate to that old version of myself. I’m so glad I wrote everything down then because that version of me needs to exist for other moms...and a reminder to myself just how much you can grow.

Since Nella, I’ve had a few opportunities to talk to moms on the fence about keeping their babies after a prenatal diagnosis. Those conversations are some of my proudest advocating moments because they’re complicated. I feel great responsibility for any influence I might have, and I feel passionate about both a woman’s right to choose and rectifying the distorted narrative I too used to believe—that raising a child with Down syndrome was a card you didn’t want to pull from the deck. My goal in those conversations isn’t to “save the baby,” It’s to connect deeply with love, mother to mother, to take away any shame for real feelings, and to tell the truth.

The truth is, life is eventually going to get hard for everyone—but she is what makes the hard in life easier. She is the greatest purest love, and I love who I’ve become as her mom. I am smarter because of Nella. I am tougher because of Nella. And I know real joy far more than I’d know if I wasn’t her mom. She constantly amazes us in what she understands and accomplishes, but I don’t want that to be the point of my awareness efforts because her worth does not increase with what she does. Maybe the awareness part of Down syndrome awareness isn’t about recognizing things people with Down syndrome can do or facts about the disability. Maybe it’s recognizing our own ability to become versions of ourselves we’d never know if we didn’t love and learn from someone who has Down syndrome. ❤️
Happy Down Syndrome Awareness Month.

Define “a bad day.” I’ll go first.

It’s fine. I’m fine. Everything’s fine. 🙂
