At just three weeks old, tiny Comet is proving to be a quick learner — she’s already flapping her miniature, heart-shaped ears like a full-grown elephant, which is one very efficient way to keep the Tsavo heat at bay. Later in the day, her mother introduced her to the art of mud bathing, with nanny Sagateisa demonstrating!

It makes us incredibly proud to see Comet’s mum, Chaimu — an orphan rescued as a young calf, raised in our care, and reintegrated back into the wild — thriving in this new chapter. She is a nurturing and attentive mother, teaching Comet life’s lessons in her measured, conscientious way. Despite Chaimu’s unconventional upbringing, she is raising her daughter like any other wild elephant. It’s such a privilege that she continues to invite us into her family, now raise her daughter like any other wild elephant.

Thank you, as ever, to our donors for helping us bring these elephant dynasties to life.

Comet is the 95th shared ‘grandcalf’ born to an orphan rescued, raised, and rewilded through our Orphans’ Project. Earlier this week, we met another new grandcalf, baby Chili. These calves are the latest in a sparkling constellation of wild elephants who are here today because an orphan’s life was saved.
