Don’t want your teen gamer to become a “weaponized incompetent” adult? Try responding to them like you’re an NPC in a video game.

Note: before someone comes at me, this is meant to be funny. I’m not saying you should literally say these things to your teen verbatim. But we’d all be lying if we said we didn’t sometimes feel like we say the same 8 things to our kids in 100 different ways, right? Find a way to respond that isn’t saying the same thing for the 101st time, or say it in a way that challenges them, or lightens the mood, or makes them laugh.

I do think there’s something to be said for helping kids (and adults) connect the dots between executive functioning skills and other parts of their lives. Many gamers, teens included, have no problem checking their inventory, asking an NPC for a tip, referring to a mission objective, or searching an area extensively to find what they need, in video games. But then they fail to do those things in the real world: pointing out that the skill of checking what you have, or checking the information available, are relevant in video games AND in the real world can help connect those dots. And it can tell teens that this is something they actually do know how to do.
