Barack and Michelle Obama are joining forces with streaming superstar IShowSpeed to bring a powerful piece of African history to theaters. Their documentary, “The Eyes of Ghana,” is scheduled for a special theatrical release on October 28, 2026, through the Obamas’ Higher Ground Productions. The project is presented by IShowSpeed and directed by two-time Oscar winner Ben Proudfoot. The 90-minute film follows 93-year-old Ghanaian cinematographer Chris Hesse, who served as the personal cameraman for Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah. Hesse captured historic moments surrounding Ghana’s independence and Africa’s liberation movements during the 1950s and 1960s. Following Nkrumah’s overthrow in 1966, Hesse protected more than 1,000 film reels from destruction. Now facing deteriorating eyesight, he is working to preserve that footage for future generations. The documentary previously premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival. IShowSpeed’s involvement follows his massive African livestreaming tour earlier this year, which included a stop in Ghana. Higher Ground also announced that additional screening dates for Ghana and the United Kingdom are coming soon, giving audiences more opportunities to witness a remarkable piece of African history. Will you be tuned in? 🎥 @highergroundmedia
