Hiroshima. Japan 🇯🇵

In 44 days my life is going to change forever. And I need advice.

This November I’ll be having a below knee amputation of my left leg. And I’m terrified.
Like many people I don’t do well with unknowns, and the number of unknowns that come with this surgery are endless. While I have a bit of practical knowledge around the surgery and the rehab timeline, there are many things I have very little knowledge on and other things I’m sure I haven’t thought of to even ask.

So to any amputee who is willing to share, I have a few questions:

If you had 44 days to prepare for your amputation, what would you do? What would you make sure you had ready? At home or for your hospital stay?

If you knew you had 44 days before losing a limb, what support systems would you put in place before hand? Many people say “Let me know if you need anything!” and I know they mean it, but I have no idea what I’ll need or what to ask for. And in the thick of it after the amputation, I’ll be in survival mode just trying to get used to my new life, so I won’t be thinking of how to tell people how they can be helpful.

So if you knew you had 44 days, what would you do?
