⚠️ pedantic lil bitch alert ⚠️
Out of all the Harry Potter tourism in Edinburgh, this is the part I hate the most. Greyfriars is overrun with people these days looking for the grave of a man who has absolutely nothing to do with She Who Must Not Be Named, and these signs play a part.
Here's why I am very confident she did not get inspo from this grave:
1. It's not Tom Riddle, it's Thomas Riddell. Riddell is a Scottish surname (correctly pronounced with the emphasis Rid-DELL) that's pretty common, as is the name Thomas. There's almost certainly at least one more in another Edinburgh graveyard and likely dozens all over the country.

2. More importantly, JK herself is on record saying 1. She didn't see the grave, and 2. She used the name Tom Marvolo Riddle because she needed an anagram for 'I am Lord Voldemort' in book 2. Straight from the transphobic, independence hating horses mouth.

Dark tourism will always exist and likely always be a part of Edinburghs genetic makeup, but I find it deeply uncomfortable to see so many tourists trampling over the graves of real people to stare at the headstone of a man who didn't consent to play a part in this.

I hope if you HAVE gone to Greyfriars to look for Tom Riddles grave, you came away with a deeper appreciation for the REAL history of the Kirkyard. The story of the covenantors, the history of the medical school, the graves of key Edinburgh figures and the rich political and cultural landscape which makes up this part of my city
