In the wake of the recent REMEL Report stating that ‘racial inequality continues to shape music event licensing’ and the ongoing battle to save the BBE Store, I have decided to look back at the story of the Flower of Kent on Lewisham Way and a selection of other Black pubs in South East London to highlight that this really is nothing new at all. Black people have always faced hostility, racism and double standards in the UK, including in Lewisham and Southwark. Pushed into creating their own spaces, they are often then forced out of them. This research draws from and aims to add to the work of the Deptford People’s Heritage Museum @deptfordpeople through their project Black Autonomous Spaces: Legacies and Dispossessions. Check out their work and that of South East Salon for more discussion of topics like this @selondonsalon Image credits: Slide 1 - eddie OTCHERE, Google Reviews Slide 2 - Jah Youth Adventures TV, Youtube Slides 4, 10 & 12 - Dover Kent Archives Slide 5 - Peace News, via Transpontine Slides 6, 8 & 20 - The Flower of Kent Slide 7 - Google Reviews Slide 9 - Deptford People’s Heritage Museum Slides 11 & 15 - Bobby g, Youtube Slide 12 - albertinesbar, Youtube Slide 13 - Google Reviews Slide 14 - Google Maps Slide 16 - Rosemarie Lanes Slide 17 - James Anthony Mcdaid Slide 18 - Unknown Slide 19 - Pubology
