LA, I’m back. 🌴
I was thinking today about failure, and my shift in perspective on the matter. For most of my life, I considered it shameful to even acknowledge the word as a possibility, let alone a constant. I think that’s because at the time I viewed it as an endpoint. A verdict, if you will. Now, in the light of later life, I see it differently. Failure is my evidence of stewardship in effort. A marker of having pushed far enough in the pursuit of a goal to discover what definitively doesn’t work. A platitude, for sure, but if I’m not failing spectacularly, I’m probably not trying hard enough. You may ask, what’s the catalyst for such a tectonic shift in vantage point? My ex. My ex once told me, “Don’t try harder, try differently.” Arguably, the best advice I’ve ever gotten. (Death rattle or not.) Time spent with that advice has led me to this: Try until failure, then try differently. Fail spectacularly in pursuit of something meaningful rather than succeed at never risking failure.

If you don’t know who Micky Gordon is, welcome to the Mickyverse. A certified internet funny girl and recent college graduate, @mickyygordon is living every Gen Zer’s dream: posting hilarious videos of yourself and your friends and ending up famous overnight. Micky is one of the emerging faces in a class of influencers who are unapologetically themselves. In her words, she writes, “I am very loud, I am very opinionated, I’m very silly, and I think it’s so important for young Black girls to have someone who looks like them be celebrated for these qualities.” For Impact’s #HumanCondition series, Micky shares that she’s unafraid “to look stupid or embarrassing, and a lot of my humor comes from that.” ✍️ Words by @mickygordon 🖌️ Design by @crstnpark
