Google’s latest lesson? You can’t have your Search and eat it, too. The company will disable Search, Gemini, and other AI tools for K–12 student accounts unless school administrators explicitly turn them on, the New York Times (NYT) reported today. The catch? Schools that want to block AI can’t keep Search, either, because Google says the services are too deeply integrated to separate. Speaking to the NYT, the company’s VP of education, Chris Phillips, explained that in the event a school has opted out of Google’s AI, students “will not have access to search, and they’ll see a message from their school that indicates it’s not available.” The move comes amid growing concerns about AI’s impact on learning, with Google instead pitching a new Guided Learning feature designed to help students work through problems rather than simply hand them answers. 📸: ABC / ‘Abbott Elementary’ / Fisher College
