Hackers linked to North Korea reportedly stole approximately $6.3 billion in cryptocurrency from Binance on October 29, 2026, in the largest cryptocurrency theft on record. Blockchain intelligence firms TRM Labs and Chainalysis linked the attack to North Korea’s TraderTraitor hacking group. Binance said investigators were still working to confirm the attackers’ identities. According to TRM Labs, the attackers drained Binance wallets across ten blockchain networks, moving most of the funds in roughly 20 minutes. The firm said it had high confidence in its attribution, citing blockchain records and other intelligence. Binance initially pointed to a compromised employee laptop but later said investigators had discovered additional breaches. The attackers reportedly compromised the systems used to authorize transactions, allowing them to drain the affected wallets. Around $3 billion in stolen assets had been frozen through coordination with industry partners. Freezing those assets restricts their movement but does not mean they have been recovered. Binance said it would cover all losses using its protection fund and company resources. The theft surpassed the previous record of $1.5 billion stolen from cryptocurrency exchange Bybit in February 2025, an attack the FBI attributed to TraderTraitor. Experts say North Korea uses cryptocurrency theft to circumvent international sanctions, obtain foreign currency, and help finance its nuclear weapons program.
