Ok y’all… run, don’t walk to see @womentalkingfilm in theatres, in support of Wild Female Imagination. I went to a special screening on Dec. 23 at @tiff_net and Director @realsarahpolley stayed for a Q&A afterwards with her collaborators, Luc Montpellier, Chris Donaldson and actress @sheilacmccarthy.
Sarah Polley is brilliant. Not only with direction, but she wrote the screenplay and made it so that the crew and actors worked regular hours and went home to their families at the end of the day. Give this woman all of the awards please!
Women Talking is adapted from Manitoba author Miriam Toews’ novel of the same name, based on a true story. A Mennonite colony in Bolivia is torn apart when it’s discovered that the men have drugged the women with cow tranquilizer and rape them in the night.
The women wake up bleeding and it’s explained away that the devil has visited them and they should pray it away. The men try to convince the women that what they experienced was merely an “act of wild female imagination”.
The women have to decide if they are going to stay or leave. The discussions they have encompass the full spectrum of diverse feminist and survivor perspectives, revealing the complexity of human experience.
Claire Foy and Rooney Mara are exceptional and give acting masterclasses.
Watching the movie, I felt both eviscerated and yet hopeful at the same time. Women Talking opens in theatres everywhere in January 2023.
