Watching the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics in Paris took me back to my trip to France in February. The @toureiffelofficielle is one of those things you have to see with your own eyes in person. It’s a beautiful architectural structure that symbolizes so much about French culture - timeless, stylish, sophisticated, innovative, iconic. Steel and lace. 🇫🇷 by @mtlgemma

From Winnipeg to Toronto, I was so lucky to catch up with @NewYorkTimes bestselling author @rupikaur_ at the end of 2022.

Fun fact: I saw Rupi at @Lilly’s NBC @LateWithLilly launch party in Los Angeles a few years back but was too shy to say hi… so I was so glad that I got to say hi twice in the span of a month this year 👋🏾

Rupi is an incredible artist with so much creativity… poetry, drawing, fashion, writing. Here’s to more of that for everyone in 2023. 💛🌻📝📚

2022 turns into 2023 🎊

In the last quarter of 2022, I moved to Toronto to join the Marketing and Communications Team for CBC News.

As the daughter of immigrants who watched The National to understand the issues that matter the most to Canadians, it only took one generation for a Peralta to be working behind the scenes at CBC’s flagship newscast. When I shared this news with my dad, he was amazed… “You will work with Adrienne and Ian? On channel 2?”

It’s an honour and a privilege and I’m so grateful for this opportunity. ♥️

My favourite 2022 CBC Manitoba event that I organized was World Press Freedom Day in partnership with the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR).

In the face of fake news, disinformation, misinformation, a relentless news cycle and social media echo chambers, the importance of a healthy and free press has never been more important.

Moderated by Isha Khan, President and CEO of the CMHR, the panelists for this discussion were Andree Lau, then CBC Managing editor - Digital news, Brent Jolly, President of the Canadian Association of Journalists, and Travis Dhanraj, then Senior Parliamentary Reporter for CBC News.

I was so excited to meet @taylortomlinson in Toronto where she sold out back-to-back-to-back-to-back shows.

I watch her two specials, Quarter Life Crisis and Look at You on @netflix, whenever I need a serotonin boost. She is hilarious 😂😆🤣

In May, she opened for Tina Fey and Amy Poehler at the Netflix is a Joke Comedy festival in LA and we got to chat about how she had to leave a friend’s wedding to do the gig!

As for the LP, Taylor was surprised that I had one. “Where did you get this? We only made a few…” It’s true - they printed 1,000 copies and there’s only 76 left.

If you follow her, you know that she’s partial to leather jackets. There was no coincidence that I wore mine that night.

TT: I like your jacket.

GP: Well, I wore it so that maybe we could match for the photo? 😉🤷🏾‍♀️

TT: (With a smile and a little shrug) I guess it’s a thing then.

Fun show, great crowd work. I would 1000% go through a brick wall for Taylor Tomlinson. Go see her on tour. Best show you’ll see in a long time.

To officially kick off the holiday season I was visited in Toronto by two of Santa’s (and my personal) favourites, @pegcityloulou & @frankiewellink. We got tickets to see the Queen of Christmas, @mariahcarey! 🎄👑🤶🏽🎁☃️❄️

She looked absolutely amazing and her voice was crystal clear perfection. No lip synching.

If you’re a doubter, just check out these video clips… Mariah’s still on top of her game. And the sets on stage were so elaborate - the production value was 10/10. She only played 4 concerts total; 2 in Toronto and 2 in NYC. Thankfully they were filmed for a special on ABC so we can relive the experience any time!

It was truly a stunning vocal performance by one of the greatest of all time. What a treat to see live. A once in a generation talent. 🎶

Ok y’all… run, don’t walk to see @womentalkingfilm in theatres, in support of Wild Female Imagination. I went to a special screening on Dec. 23 at @tiff_net and Director @realsarahpolley stayed for a Q&A afterwards with her collaborators, Luc Montpellier, Chris Donaldson and actress @sheilacmccarthy.

Sarah Polley is brilliant. Not only with direction, but she wrote the screenplay and made it so that the crew and actors worked regular hours and went home to their families at the end of the day. Give this woman all of the awards please!

Women Talking is adapted from Manitoba author Miriam Toews’ novel of the same name, based on a true story. A Mennonite colony in Bolivia is torn apart when it’s discovered that the men have drugged the women with cow tranquilizer and rape them in the night.

The women wake up bleeding and it’s explained away that the devil has visited them and they should pray it away. The men try to convince the women that what they experienced was merely an “act of wild female imagination”.

The women have to decide if they are going to stay or leave. The discussions they have encompass the full spectrum of diverse feminist and survivor perspectives, revealing the complexity of human experience.

Claire Foy and Rooney Mara are exceptional and give acting masterclasses.

Watching the movie, I felt both eviscerated and yet hopeful at the same time. Women Talking opens in theatres everywhere in January 2023.
