A former NICU nurse at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital is facing multiple child abuse charges after a premature baby girl was found with broken bones and bruises just days before she was expected to go home. Kieran Ansley, 43, is charged with two counts of second-degree child abuse and two counts of fourth-degree child abuse. He was fired from the hospital after the allegations surfaced. The baby was born at just 23 weeks, weighing 1 pound, 1 ounce, and spent months receiving treatment in the NICU. Her family said she was only two days away from going home when the injuries were discovered in April. Court records say the baby’s mother noticed new bruises and that her daughter’s tongue appeared blue and nearly black. Medical testing later revealed multiple fractures, including broken bones in both legs, along with bruising on several areas of her body. Investigators reviewed hospital logs showing the baby’s room was entered 32 times overnight, with Ansley accounting for 27 of those visits. Ansley’s attorney said he has cooperated with investigators and that the defense plans to conduct its own investigation. The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court. The baby is now 10 months old, home with her family and reportedly doing well.
