🌙🎹 Claude Debussy – Clair de lune, Suite bergamasque, L. 75 Menahem Pressler – piano 🎹 • Years after this concert, Pressler recorded a disc of French music called Clair de lune for Deutsche Grammophon, with pieces by Debussy, Fauré and Ravel, and dedicated it to Annabelle, his partner. He explained to Pianist magazine: "I made it for Annabelle. She likes French music, and the record was meant to show my love for her." The piece that gives the disc its name is the third of the Suite bergamasque, a suite for piano in which Clair de lune comes after a Prélude and a Menuet and before a Passepied. Debussy published the suite in Paris, through the publisher Fromont. • Listen again and notice the volume around the second time the camera pulls back to show Pressler in full, in profile, at the piano. Shortly before, during a close-up of his face, the sound keeps dropping until it stays faint for a few seconds. Right after the camera opens up, the volume comes back up all at once. • The recording is of a concert in Paris, according to DW, which published the video. For decades, Pressler's name was tied to the Beaux Arts Trio, which he founded with the violinist Daniel Guilet and the cellist Bernard Greenhouse and in which he was the only founder to play from beginning to end. When the trio ended, Pressler was 84 and turned to the solo and orchestral repertoire. In the close-ups of his face, here, he plays with his head down, eyes closed or almost closed, and at times his mouth opens. In the video description, DW carries a line from Pressler: "I am still hungry for music." • 👉 Follow for the best of classical music daily on your feed. • #clairdelune #debussy #menahempressler #classicalmusic
