Every family seems to have one person who proudly says, “We’re not getting a cat.” Most of the time, it’s Dad. He insists the cat isn’t allowed on the furniture, says he doesn’t want the responsibility, and claims he’ll have nothing to do with it. Everyone hears the speech… but somehow, the cat ends up coming home anyway. Fast forward a few months, and Dad is the cat’s favorite human. He’s the one secretly buying the expensive treats, building little cardboard forts, and making sure the food bowl is never empty. If anyone asks, he’ll still say, “It’s not my cat,” even as the cat is curled up asleep on his lap. The funniest part is watching the rules slowly disappear. “The cat isn’t sleeping in my bed,” turns into, “Don’t wake him up—he’s comfortable.” “No people food,” becomes tiny bites of chicken magically appearing under the table. Before long, Dad is taking pictures of the cat, talking to it like an old friend, and worrying if it’s been asleep for too long. Everyone knows how the story ends. The dad who didn’t want a cat becomes the person most obsessed with it. He’ll deny it every chance he gets, but his camera roll is full of cat photos, he knows exactly what every meow means, and he somehow becomes the first person the cat looks for every morning. On Wednesday I was fortunate enough to be given an Honorary title of “Doctor of Arts” by @bathspauni and I couldn’t be more grateful! Firstly, I’d like to start by saying congratulations to everyone who I met yesterday and anyone at all who has graduated this year. Also, to anyone who has worked for an actual doctorate this is by no means anywhere near as impressive as anything you have done or achieved, nor will I pretend it is, serious hats off to you all. When I got offered this opportunity my initial reaction was disbelief; as I wondered why I deserved such a privilege. I even questioned accepting due to the over consuming imposter syndrome. However, that is a feeling I’ve felt a lot over the last few years and the opportunities I’ve been able to experience because of that feeling of “why me?” have been the best of my life. So, I accepted despite that feeling due to one main reason. When I was at uni (and to an extent to this day) I feared judgement. I knew I wanted to make videos because I’d watched them for years and had a desire that I’d not felt for anything else before; but I didn’t act on it because it wasn’t comfortable and I was scared what people would think. That feeling hasn’t left, rather it’s become easier to deal with the more I branch outside of my comfort zone. Appearing on other people’s channels, dancing and public speaking would’ve felt even more alien to the version of me that hadn’t yet started posting and putting himself out of his comfort zone. So I accepted because if any 1 person resonated with that maybe they could take a bit of a leap themselves. I don’t think I’m the best or most talented content creator around and I don’t class myself as “successful”. However, to me that shows you don’t have to have it all figured out or be the final article to give it a go. It was a true honour and a privilege to be considered and one hell of a side quest. So thanks again to Bath Spa University and to you all for allowing me to have a job I wake up daily wondering how I got so lucky. (Honorary)Dr. Clarkey x
