16?!!!!! I’m a mess lol. I can’t believe my baby is 16. 😩🥲I literally don’t know where the time went but I’m so thankful for this kid right here. Road maintenance is one of the most important responsibilities of modern infrastructure, yet neglected streets can deteriorate so badly that they begin revealing layers of history underneath them. Most modern roads are constructed using asphalt, which provides a relatively smooth and durable surface for vehicles. However, constant traffic, temperature changes, moisture and poor drainage can gradually weaken the material, causing cracks, potholes and sections of pavement to collapse. In areas with older infrastructure, roads are sometimes resurfaced multiple times rather than completely reconstructed, leaving previous surfaces buried beneath newer layers. When the asphalt eventually breaks apart, these older materials can become visible again, occasionally revealing construction methods that haven’t been commonly used for generations. One particularly fascinating photograph shows a badly damaged asphalt road exposing what appears to be an older brick or stone-block surface underneath. The unusual discovery has sparked jokes that the street has deteriorated so severely it’s practically returned to the Victorian era. During the 19th century, many urban streets were constructed using cobblestones, stone setts or specially manufactured paving bricks, which could withstand heavy horse-drawn traffic before asphalt became widely adopted. Some of these historic surfaces remain buried beneath modern streets today, preserved for decades beneath layers of pavement. While the photograph doesn’t establish exactly when the exposed blocks were installed, it’s remarkable how a neglected road can accidentally reveal an entirely different generation of infrastructure.
