While everyone else is still arguing over which Type R is better, I’m having fun with mine. Added the FL5 Illuminated Door Sills to my FK8. You NEED the FK8 6-pin harness for power in order for this to work. I never had the FK8 version, but opted for the FL5 version because “Type R” lit up instead of just the “R”.

A modern smartphone is really just a collection of specialized parts working together. One chip handles the interface, another handles cellular service, another manages charging, while a larger processor runs the operating system and heavier apps. Once you break it down that way, the phone in your pocket starts to look a lot less mysterious.

The interesting part is that many of these components are available to regular builders. Raspberry Pi modules can run Linux, ESP32 boards can manage controls and graphics, cellular modems can add LTE, and off-the-shelf camera sensors and touchscreens can handle the rest. The difficult part isn’t finding the hardware. It’s designing a board, getting every component to communicate properly, and writing software that makes the whole thing feel like one device.

You probably wouldn’t build one of these to replace your iPhone tomorrow. But that’s not really the point. A project like this shows how much of modern consumer technology can now be recreated with parts you can actually buy, documentation you can read, and open-source tools you can download yourself.
