Before modern anesthesia, amputations were performed with the patient fully conscious, so speed was considered a major surgical skill. The limb would be restrained, sometimes with assistants physically holding the patient down, and surgeons often used alcohol, opium, or other sedatives to dull pain, but these were nowhere near as effective or predictable as anesthesia. A skilled surgeon could remove a limb in just a few minutes because every extra second meant more agony and blood loss. The procedure itself involved cutting through skin and muscle, sawing through the bone, tying off major blood vessels, and closing the wound as best they could. The pain was only part of the danger: infection, shock, and hemorrhage killed many patients, especially before antiseptic techniques became common. Surgery in that era was less “precision medicine” and more “do this as fast as humanly possible before everything goes catastrophically wrong.” Like this content? Follow us for more @dadsaysjokes ❤️

The tigers at Yorkshire Wildlife Park are housed in the Land of the Tigers enclosure, which has a 300m-long raised walkway so visitors can watch the animals from above. An eyewitness has described the moment a man climbed up onto the barriers and was spoken to by a woman before "he jumped in and crawled in front of the tiger, where the tiger was perched and just lay there". She estimates that about 15 to 20 people were on the enclosure's raised visitor walkway before staff quickly evacuated the area and the park. Read more by tapping the link in @BBCYorkshire's bio.
