“This is just a Pigeon”
13.5” x 11.25”
In a world that venerates the strong, the bold and the audacious; sometimes the savage, the massive and the pugnacious.
I would like to shed a light on the humble pigeon. (specifically the carrier pigeon)
A creature so overlooked and dismissed that most have no idea how much we, the civilizations that stand upon the shoulders of giants, owe to these unassuming feathered animals.
You see, historically pigeons were used to transport messages over vast distances, no matter how far you take a carrier pigeon from its roost it will flap its wings tirelessly until it has come home; irrespective of what message has been sent.
These creatures will endure hell through the skies to reach their home.
For thousands of years they've been employed in the passing of messages as innocuous as a love letter to political plans, secrets and everyday news including to being deployed in heat of battle.
How many times have the messages they carried reached their destination and changed the outcome of battle we may never know. But what is certain is that the world in which we stand today may have been shaped by the impetuousness of these birds.
As late as as WWII (def still in use in some places) they were employed in battle. There are stories told of these messages, after being received, either saved the lives of countless combatants or altogether changed the outcome of the battle, perhaps even the war. Stories of these humble birds coming home to roost littered with bullet holes, broken wings, missing eyes… the bravest of the brave.
In a world where the predator is king.
I salute you my humble flying brother.
We owe you more than we’ll ever know, I hereby humbly recognize you and your contributions to this experiment of civilization, building, destroying, rebuilding.
