A 2026 study examined 309 couples, 618 people, across three studies to investigate whether romantic partners share similarities in musical taste. Researchers found that real couples were significantly more similar in their preferences for genres and artists than randomly paired people. The study also found a positive association between shared music preferences and relationship quality, particularly when couples shared favorite artists. The findings suggest that music can reflect aspects of identity, lifestyle and emotional tendencies, creating another way for partners to connect and understand each other.
