Where does bro get any of these ideas? 😭

HOLY MACKEREL YOU GUYS.

I was feeling hopeful but maybe a little nervous about reaching our Kickstarter goal in the allotted 20 days. And then you funded it in less than three hours. WHAT?!?

The love and support around this project has left me, for once, speechless. Launching the Kickstarter was like walking out onto a dark stage, and then seeing the immediate support pouring in felt like the house lights coming up to reveal a room full of friendly faces. “Thank you” doesn’t quite cut it here. But thank you all the same.

Curiosities expansion plans are in order. More curious stuff incoming, musical and otherwise (see the Kickstarter for a more detailed update).

Thank you for showing up for this project! 17 days left to preorder Curiosities on Kickstarter, and then the whole thing comes out on Friday the 13th next month. Can’t wait to share it with you.

Big first day in Zambia with @worldbicyclerelief.

Zambians are friendly. They are calm and speak quietly. They are easy to laugh and everyone waves back.

I milked a cow for the first time, rode to the dairy cooperative with 50 liters of milk on my rear rack, visited a local bike shop, a regional outpost, the distribution center and built a Buffalo Bike with an assembler. I learned a lot.

About a month ago, WBR asked me to emcee their end of year event in Chicago in November. A couple weeks ago they asked if I’d like to see the work in person. Rue and I are in Zambia this week and it’s incredible to see how these bikes are a tool to support the community.

Started by one of the founders of SRAM, this non-profit has given away one million utilitarian bikes to students, farmers and healthcare workers around the world to combat “mobility poverty”— they can carry heavy loads farther & faster, see more patients and travel long distances to get to school. Three hundred and forty thousand of these bikes are in Zambia.

These bikes are burly & built to last with simple maintenance— 1 or 2 speed, full steel, extra strong chain, spokes, rims & drum brake. You can build them with a few wrenches and a screwdriver. They can carry 100kg (220 lbs) on the rear rack.

Buffalo Bikes is the social enterprise that helps support World Bicycle Relief’s philanthropic work. They hire & train local mechanics, help locals open shops to sell repair parts and sell bikes to local business owners. This has led to great economic gains. For example, the dairy farmer I visited this morning can start milking his cows at 4am, pack the milk on the bikes, ride 6km and get it to market before the 8am cutoff.

Tomorrow we’ll ride with healthcare workers to visit patients just outside of the capital.
