When a Japanese spider crab goes through a growth spurt, it can get a little cramped inside that shell, so it will molt (or shed) its old one before revealing something shiny and new. It’d be just like outgrowing your pants and needing a larger size (if your pants were acting as your protective suit of armor, of course)
