Mourning for the Abandoned, Death for the Cycles

The “Humanrock” determines the form and meaning, the material itself. The shards of pottery, that were once fired but never finished, is the identical materials. Sim’s act of pounding and grinding ceramics in a mortar and pestle equals to the natural weathering process of rocks breaking down and returning to the soil. Human productivity has created a gap so large that nature's rate of weathering cannot keep up, but instead of feeling helpless, the artist decided to salvage what she could reach out rather than feeling helpless.

The pieces, once stubbornly hardened by the fire, bump into each other and break under the force of the artist. Finally they lose their form entirely and become pliable enough to be melded together. Sim mourns the soil that has lost its materials surrounded by glaze and opens up a path of reviviscence for it to return to the soil. With the cycle of nature and the continuity of life and death, Sim's ceramics become urns and eternal resting places for countless earth spirits.
