Over 70% of residents in Miami-Dade’s City of Doral are foreign born — 40% from Venezuela.

It is a city of immigrants run by a government of (mostly) immigrants. And yet, the mayor (Cuban-American) and all four council members (born in Venezuela, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico) voted unanimously for a 287(g) ICE collaboration agreement that has local police help enforce federal immigration law. Which has created mistrust of cops and destroyed the economy.

Since then, the subsequent end of TPS and a new ICE crackdown has Doral devolving into a ghost town with locals living in fear and business owners seeing sales plummet by as much as 70-80%.

Those of us who don’t have to worry about getting deported have a responsibility to support our friends and neighbors who are too scared to even leave their homes let alone speak truth to power.
