Norway’s public tax records have roots going back centuries.

Records from around 1660 show tax assessments being posted publicly in towns, partly so people could see how taxes were being assessed and challenge unfair treatment. Until 1980, Norwegians could even object to another person’s tax assessment.

The tradition moved online in 2001, when searchable tax lists began appearing through Norwegian media. This made it dramatically easier to look up neighbors, coworkers and public figures. Privacy concerns eventually led to restrictions: from 2011, media organizations could no longer publish the complete lists as searchable databases, and in 2013 anonymous searching effectively ended.

Today, Norway’s official tax lists show a person’s name, birth year, location, net income, net wealth and tax paid. Users must log in and can view up to 500 people per month.

When you open someone’s record, that person can see your name, birth year, postal area and when you looked them up; the search-history information is updated hourly.
