3 years agoYour goal is for Cooper to let you know what she cannot yet verbalize, right? It's fine to have your own "home" signs--especially if they aid family communication. It's all 😎.
3 years agoMy kids “signed” for milk by grabbing my shirt and nuzzling. 😂 YOU know what she wants and she is communicating that to you. No parent fails here, please don’t fall into that trap of parenting fails this early on. Wait till her first huge bump on her head to feel guilty.
3 years agoI’d call it a home sign. They’re the ones you make up at home (or a home variation on a common sign). Go with it! Keep producing the correct sign and she’ll get there when she’s ready!
3 years agoMaybe try correcting her in a different way? Using only your fingers on one hand while demonstrating with the other?
3 years agoASL fluent here: my daughter did the same thing and then corrected it around 8/9 months. BUT like verbal speech, signing will be in "baby speak"! They may even babble in sign!
