Bollywood actor Salman Khan has urged students and supporters to end the ongoing protest and return home, just hours after publicly backing their movement against alleged examination paper leaks. Reacting after Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised strict action against those responsible for harming the future of students, Salman wrote, “Please go back home,” while directly addressing hunger-striking activist Sonam Wangchuk. He added, “Sonam bro, eat something, I’ll send food,” suggesting that the government’s assurance had addressed the protesters’ central concern. The appeal marks a noticeable shift from Salman’s earlier statement, in which he described paper leaks as a serious issue and praised students for coming together to demand a better education system. He had called the protesters “courageous and brave” and said that the present generation would make India proud. Salman had also expressed sadness over the peaceful movement turning violent and extended support to students and their families who were injured. At the same time, he maintained that the movement should not be politically hijacked and that its credit should remain with the students. His latest message has now sparked mixed reactions online. While some users welcomed the actor’s call for peace and said the government should be given time to act, others questioned why the protest should be withdrawn merely on the basis of an assurance. The protesters have been demanding accountability over alleged paper leaks, stronger examination safeguards and action against officials responsible for irregularities. Sonam Wangchuk has continued his hunger strike as the movement grows beyond its original student-led demands. Salman’s apparent U-turn has therefore become the latest talking point surrounding the protest, with critics arguing that concrete action—not just promises—will determine whether the agitation actually comes to an end.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that the government will establish fast-track courts to speed up trials in examination paper leak cases, declaring that those who attempt to destroy the future of India’s youth “will not be spared.” The Prime Minister said there was nothing more important than protecting the welfare and future of young people. He asserted that the proposed courts would ensure swift proceedings and stringent punishment for individuals and organised groups involved in leaking examination papers. The announcement comes amid widespread anger over alleged irregularities and paper leaks in competitive examinations. Student-led demonstrations have intensified in Delhi, with protesters demanding accountability, stronger safeguards for examinations and action against those responsible for compromising the careers of lakhs of aspirants. Modi had earlier described paper leaks as a “grave sin” and said the government was working to make the examination system foolproof. He also called for the strictest possible action against offenders and urged political parties not to treat the future of students as a partisan issue. India already has the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024, which treats the leakage of question papers and answer keys as an offence. The law provides imprisonment of three to five years for certain offences, while organised examination fraud can attract five to ten years in jail and a minimum fine of ₹1 crore. However, concerns have continued over delays in investigation and prosecution. The government’s latest move is aimed at ensuring that accused individuals are tried quickly instead of cases remaining pending for years.
