Russell Wilson’s story with his ex-wife, Ashton Meem, goes back to their high school days in Richmond, Virginia. The two began dating in 2006 and stayed together as Wilson pursued his football career at NC State before transferring to Wisconsin for his final college season. They got married on January 14, 2012, just three months before Wilson was selected by the Seattle Seahawks with the 75th overall pick in the third round of the NFL Draft. When Wilson’s name was called, Meem was right beside him, celebrating what appeared to be the beginning of an incredible new chapter for the couple. Wilson entered the NFL as an undersized quarterback with plenty to prove, but he quickly earned the starting job in Seattle and helped transform the Seahawks into a championship contender.

Just two years later, however, their relationship came to an end. In April 2014, shortly after Wilson led Seattle to a Super Bowl XLVIII championship, he announced that he had filed for divorce from Meem. The split attracted significant attention because Wilson’s career was taking off at the same time his marriage was falling apart. Rumors circulated online involving former Seahawks teammate Golden Tate, but Tate publicly denied any affair or involvement in the divorce, and the actual reason for their separation was never publicly established. Wilson eventually moved on with singer Ciara, whom he married in 2016, while Meem largely stayed out of the spotlight. Looking back, their story is a reminder that even when a couple appears to be celebrating a dream come true on draft night, nobody knows what is happening behind closed doors.
