I had barely touched my twenties when I became a mother, and in so many ways, @karanbhas.in and I grew up together. We studied together, giggled over the silliest things, played together, and rushed through those chaotic school mornings. Looking back, so much of my growing-up years were wrapped around him. Back then, he called me Aati . Today he calls me Ma. I remember telling him once, in one of those emotional moments, that I always wanted to be a mother who could walk with her head held high when it came to her son. I wanted to always be proud of the person he was. And I still remember his little voice saying, “I promise you Aati, I’ll always make you proud.” Karan, you have. In more ways than you will ever know, son. Today, as I watch you make your own place in the world, I see the same sensitive, caring boy who has grown into a man with beautiful values, empathy and such a thoughtful heart. And sometimes, I wonder how the years went by so quickly. Happy birthday, beta! No matter how old you grow or how far life takes you, you will always be that little boy who grew up with me. And I will always, always be the ma who walks with her head held high because of you. I love you more than words will ever be able to say. ♥️♥️ Birthday love | Proud mom | Birthday wishes | The Indian Woman | Growing Up Together #birthdayboy🎉 #mysonmypride #motherhood #growinguptogether❤️

My friend is gone. I met Maven in 2009, before I even moved to New Orleans. He made my first set of fangs and opened his home to me when a series of unfortunate events left me out on the streets in a foreign country. I will never forget that. He was kind, generous to a fault, and made me feel safe. At a time when I was incredibly vulnerable, he stepped up as a community leader and a good friend, a good man, and made sure I was okay. He continued to advocate for me—and for so many others—even when speaking up was hard and put him at personal risk. My heart goes out to everyone who loved him and who truly knew the quality of his heart. Things were supposed to get better. This is so deeply unfair.
